In 1960 A tuba player named Ray Wright told me there was a trumpet player playing at the Blue Note in Detroit. I couldn't get in, too young 13 years old, but that began the love affair with his sound. I think the first album I bought was Come Blow Your Horn.
Up to that time I had never heard a player play above a high D. I was working on on Ab above the staff. I had never heard a sound so thick and rich. So flexible, and above all was musicianship that s urpassed what I believed possible.
To say Maynard was my trumpet idol is an understatement. My first trumpet was a Constellation. From that beginning a seed was planted in this Hoosier. I have still to hear a player like Maynard. No one comes close!!!
