Mark Curry CCaps Report
................................................................................................................................

I purchased the CCaps  prior to my overhaul by the Schilke Company. I followed the reccomendation I read on the internet by Rick Baptist, to use the 3rd valve CCap with both shims and none on the 2nd valve. I also left the 1st valve with the original Schilke.

After the overhaul I felt like the horn was thinning our, getting a little airy,so I attempted to close the larger Curry vent hole with a piece of brass plate between the shims, This brought the diameter down to approximately the same as the other Schilke caps, but was stuffy.

I then wrote Curry and asked if they could make some shims with the same diameter vent hole as the Schilke originals. Several weeks later I received 2 shims with the new smaller holes. One was standard thickness, and the other was double thickness.

It took a few hours to decide that the best set up was with the double thickness shim in the 3rd valve CCap, and the 1st and 2nd valve the original Schilke caps.

The horn speaks quicker, is more locked in, retains the exact sound of the original Schilke caps, but allows me to move air through the horn with more volume and speed, without the backpressure.

My "core balance" is maintained and the sound is wonderful - especially in the upper register. Notes between Hi C and Double D are secure, easy to play, and sing, and they flow out without the unnecessary backpressure.

I have written Mark and suggested he make these optional sized shims for Schilke owners. We'll see if he agrees.:)

Received two new brass shims from Mark. 1 is normal thickness and the other double thickness. Both have the diameter of the Schilke hole and play a thousand times better than the larger holes in the original shims. He has several ideas for newer and better products for us. I appreciate his personal response - making these shims for me.

Have fun - never quit improving - spread the word.
